Born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Attended Cathedral High School, class of 1988.
1988–93
St. Joseph's and Ball State
Began college at Division II St. Joseph's, transferred to Ball State. Two-time All-MAC selection and two-year team captain. 243 career tackles.
1993
Drafted, 214th overall
Selected by the Houston Oilers in the 8th round of the 1993 NFL Draft after invitations to the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine.
1995–97
Three consecutive Pro Bowls
Selected to three straight Pro Bowls at strong safety.
1997–99
Franchise relocation
Played through the franchise's move from Houston to Memphis to Nashville, serving as a six-time franchise captain across his years with the team.
1999–2000
Super Bowl XXXIV
Started for the Titans in their run to Super Bowl XXXIV, which the team lost to the St. Louis Rams.
2000
Fourth Pro Bowl and All-Pro
Earned a fourth Pro Bowl selection and a third All-Pro honor.
2002
Final NFL season
Played one season with the Philadelphia Eagles, pairing with future Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins at safety, before retiring after ten seasons.

Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame
Inducted into the Ball State University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Senior Bowl Hall of Fame
Inducted as part of the 29th Senior Bowl Hall of Fame class, alongside Jim Harbaugh and Lance Briggs.

Inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on June 16, 2018.

Coaching
Moved into high school coaching in Middle Tennessee, working with defensive backs and units in a defensive coordinator role.
